Robert Barisford Brown is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and dancer. Brown, along with his regular collaborator Teddy Riley, is considered the pioneer of the new jack swing: a mix of hip hop and R&B. Brown began his career with the R&B and pop group New Edition, from its founding in 1981 until his departure from the group in December 1985. Beginning his solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with the second album Don ' t Be Cruel. All five singles topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts, including Grammy-winning number one hits "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step." In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack. In 1992, Brown married superstar singer Whitney Houston, with whom he later had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug problems and family conflicts made it food for the tabloid.
