Joseph Carey Merrick, often mistakenly known as John Merrick, is an Englishman known to have severe malformations. He was first exhibited at a bizarre exhibition called "The Elephant", then moved to hospital in London to live after meeting Frederick Treves, then became famous in London society. Merrick was born in Leicester and began to develop abnormally before the age of five. His mother died when he was eleven and his father remarried soon. Refused by his father and stepmother, he left home and went to live with his uncle Charles Merrick. In 1879, 17-year-old Merrick joined Leicester Union Workhouse. In 1884, he contacted a performer named Sam Torr and asked Torr to exhibit him. Torr organized a group of men to deal with Merrick, whom they called "the elephants". After touring the East Midlands, Merrick went to London to be displayed in a gaff penny shop hired by performer Tom Norman.
