Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Tallchief is an American ballerina. She is considered the first great preliminary ballerina in America. She is the first Native American to hold this rank and is believed to have revolutionized ballet. Almost from birth, Tallchief has been taking dance lessons, starting formal lessons at the age of three. When she was eight, her family moved from her birthplace in Fairfax, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles, California. The aim of this move is to advance the careers of Maria and her sister, Marjorie. At the age of 17, she moved to New York in search of a position in a large ballet company and at the request of her superiors, she took the name Maria Tallchief. She spent the next 5 years at the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet Theater, where she met choreographer George Balanchine. When Balanchine co-founded what would become the New York City Ballet Theater in 1946, Tallchief became the company's first star.
